Manaslu rises 8,163 meters, making it the eighth highest mountain in the world. The region was closed to tourists until 1991 when organized groups were first allowed to visit the area. Today, a special permit is required in order to enter, thereby helping to preserve its uniqueness.

Manaslu is the highest peak in the area, with long ridges and glacial valleys. The Annapurna Mountain range is to the southwest while the Ganesh Himal mountains are to the east. The Budi Gandaki River cuts a deep gorge through the area, forming part of what was the Great Salt Trail that passed from Tibet southward for many centuries.

The Manaslu Conservation Area is home of many endangered animals, including the snow leopard and the red panda. Over 110 species of birds, 33 mammals, and 13 different types of butterflies have been recorded. The animals have been allowed to grow in population due to the influence of Tibetan Buddhism which has banned hunting in the region.

The area is popular for trekking and offers a number of options ranging from two to three weeks. The trek now lies on the newly organized Great Himalaya Trail.  Trekking is restricted to groups (minimum of two) with a registered guide. The restrictions were placed to help preserve both its fragile eco-system and the culture of the residents.

Most of the residents make the living in marginal farming, supplementing it with tourism. The region is more endemic to the Tibet before the Chinese invasion in the 1950s. There are lamas and monasteries that celebrate the deep religious roots of the people of Manaslu.

Visitors can camp or trek to various tea houses and homestays along the way. The people are warm and friendly, with Tibetan hospitality as they welcome you into their homes and communities.

The trail is easy to moderate, making it an ideal trek for most people.  It will pass along the Budi Gandaki River and through many picturesque villages along with wilderness settings. The highest point on the trail is 5,200 meters at Larke Pass, which affords excellent views of Mt. Manaslu, as well as the other peaks of the region, will be inspiring.

Visitors can also take advantage of an optional trek into Tsum Valley, which requires a separate permit. Tsum Valley just opened to visitors in 2008 and offers an opportunity to visit a place few outsiders have ever been.

From the incredible lofty elevation of Mt. Manaslu to the warm hospitality of its residents, the Manaslu region will offer trekkers a unique glimpse into a region that is close to Kathmandu, but so distant culturally.
