Dolpo Trekking Route Options

Dolpo trek can start and end at various routes. You need to fly first either from/to Nepalgunj, Surkhet ( to Jumla, or Juphal). There are two more routes to start from Beni and Jomsom (the most experience trekkers' route from/to Jomsom).

There are routes from Jumla (airport) to Dolpo Phoksundo lake via Kagmara La (5115m), Juphal (airport) to Phoksundo lake, and Beni to Dunai via Dho Tarap and Phoksundo. These various routes are still within the lower Dolpo boundary crossing over Baga La (5175m) and Numa La (5318m). If you are more interested in upper Dolpo’s vast traditional and spectacular landscape then need to cross Kang La (5375m) and out via Shey La (5010m) and Jyanta/Jeng La (5110m) combining Dho Tarap. If you are a highly experienced trekker in Nepal Himalayan then there is an exit route to Jomsom via Shey La (5010m), Chharka La (4920m), Sangda La (5460m) and there are a couple of passes in between, 4200 to 4800m. By the way, there is still one option that is the most adventurous, it is called the Dolpo Rara adventure trek. There are three more passes after Shey Gompa, between 5150 to 5600m.

The most popular route of Upper Dolpo is to start/end at Juphal (Dunai) clockwise or any clockwise which covers Phoksundo lake and Dho Tarap via Baga La and Numa La passes. It is because of no need to pay high royalty for the trip as a Dolpo trekking permit as well as just two high passes above 5000 meters. So, to be honest, the Dolpo trek is a hard-class trekking route. Dolpo Trekking's best season is May to October. You should have either trekking experience or be organized by a highly experienced trekking agency as we have been working continuously since 1999.

“Dolpa” is the written word by the government of Nepal. It is locally spelled Dolpo and the word is most popular for tourism in Nepal spelled as by local “Dolpo”. There are two Dolpo such as Lower and Upper. The Upper Dolpo is one of the deep gorges and widely hidden arid valley treks in Nepal Himalaya. It is known as a remote Himalayan trek in Nepal as well as a rain shadow or no rain belt region in Nepal.  Nowadays, it is challenging because of warming globalization. Upper Dolpo is also a roof of Nepal.  Upper Dolpo starts after Phoksundo Lake and it is the deepest lake in Nepal. It has made a waterfall which is the highest waterfall in Nepal as well. Phoksundo is a spell by locals as phok sum do (three arms of the Lake).  It lies within Shey Phoksundo Nationalpal which was established in 1981 and it is the largest protected by the national park.

Upper Dolpo Trek is an adventure trek to the legendary crystal mountain and Shey Gompa (monastery) cross high passes 5000 meters above sea level. The trek attraction is Phoksundo lake, Tibetan stylish villages, Tibetan tradition, and Bonpo monasteries with a spectacular landscape. So, most of Dolpo is linked with Tibet and there is still trade with Tibet on the ancient grain for salt and needs. The southern part of Dolpo is Hindu influence. The Dolpo region was closed to tourists until 1989. It is one of the most expensive treks due to camping organizing and trekking permit royalty of US Dollar 500 each head for 10 days and after 10 days US Dollar 50 per head per day.
